Mohkien is based on the Hokkien language, mainly from Medan Hokkien, which is a Hokkien creole spoken predominantly at Medan city, North Sumatera province, Indonesia. Mohkien can also be used as a stepping stone to help learners gain insight into Medan Hokkien and Taiwanese Hokkien, as well as the other variants of Hokkien language.
