September 1774 in Greifswald, nehme mir mit dieser Schrift zur Aufgabe stumpfsinnige Deutungsansätze meines Gemäldes „Kreidefelsen auf Rügen' endlich zu widerlegen.Wir schreiben das Jahr 1819, so eben habe ich mein Gemälde „Kreidefelsen auf Rügen' fertiggestellt und der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Wieder einmal fingen die Herren Kunstkritiker und auch so mancher Kunstfreund an, an dem Bild „herumzuinterpretieren'. Normalerweise sollte ich sie denken lassen was sie mögen und darüber lachen - zweiteres tue ich auch gemeinsam mit meiner Frau - doch dieses Bild ist anders als alle meinen anderen Gemälde zuvor. Es trägt eine besondere Bedeutung für mich und meine Frau inne und kann nicht frei nach dem Motto „Was er immer tat, wird er auch weiterhin tun' betrachtet werden. (Dies meine ich im Bezug auf Konstruktion und Motive, die meine vorherigen Bilder stets zum Raum für Interpretationen machten). [...]
