Life expectancy in Central Europe is rising, and with it the number of elderly people. By 2030, 23.6% of Austria’s total population is expected to be over 65 years of age. The number of elderly people in need of assistance and care will therefore increase rapidly. Accommodating this group of people in residential care homes will pose a major problem for social welfare providers, as the costs of care home accommodation are very high. Those affected must be offered an alternative to care home accommodation by enabling them to live as independently and with as much dignity as possible in their own homes. This must also become a long-term goal for our society. The relatives of elderly people in need of help and care often lack information about the alternatives to residential care. Case management contact points and the targeted, professional deployment of case managers can be one option here. This allows the areas of elderly people’s lives to be organised and individually adapted to their needs.
