Bajo este contexto, destacan ciertas tecnologías que facilitan la localización de puntos sobre la superficie terrestre, trabajo que realizan los equipos de posicionamiento global o GPS (Global Positioning System), así como la confección de modelos tridimensionales o 3D que agregan la altura de puntos a la anterior información bidimensional o 2D determinada por las coordenadas de un punto. Por otra parte, debemos considerar la definición de usos y ocupaciones del suelo, subsuelo, atmosféricas y del medio hídrico proporcionadas por imágenes satelitales y, finalmente, la integración de todo lo anterior, a través de sistemas de información geográfica o SIG.
