Tooth decay, or dental caries, is a widespread and irreversible condition that damages tooth structure. It is primarily influenced by bacteria, diet, and an individual’s susceptibility. Managing cavities effectively focuses more on prevention than invasive treatments, which is why conducting a thorough caries risk assessment (CRA) is crucial. CRA helps categorize patients into different risk levels-low, moderate, or high-by evaluating aspects such as oral bacteria, diet, tooth strength, saliva production, and fluoride exposure. Several programs namely, Caries management by risk assessment (CAMBRA), Cariogram, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s (AAPD’s) CRA form, contribute to personalized evaluations and treatment planning. Thanks to modern diagnostic advancements, preventive strategies are becoming more precise, leading to better oral health outcomes. As CRA continues to develop, its role in dental care becomes even more vital in both treatment and patient education.
