Nel 2009, il numero complessivo degli sfollati interni nel mondo era stimato in 27,1 milioni, di cui 11,6 milioni in Africa. In Somalia, il numero degli sfollati interni era stimato in 1.500.000 persone, mentre in Somaliland era stimato in 66.000 persone. Il problema oggetto dello studio era che questi sfollati interni vivono in condizioni difficili, caratterizzate da carenza di cibo, basso reddito e mancanza di accesso all’istruzione, alla sanità e all’occupazione. Lo studio ha esaminato le caratteristiche e lo status socioeconomico degli sfollati interni a Hargeisa, Somaliland. Lo studio si è concentrato su quattro obiettivi: accesso al cibo, all’istruzione, alla sanità e all’occupazione o al reddito degli sfollati interni. Lo studio ha utilizzato metodi sia qualitativi che quantitativi, ovvero dati numerici e non numerici. Per lo svolgimento dello studio è stato applicato un disegno di ricerca descrittivo. I dati sono stati raccolti tramite questionario. Il campione era composto da 180 intervistati, selezionati utilizzando tecniche di campionamento probabilistiche e non probabilistiche, in particolare tecniche di campionamento sistematico e mirato.
