La structure des branchies du poisson amazonien Arapaima gigas, un respirateur aérien obligatoire, a été analysée lors du passage à la respiration aérienne obligatoire et les données obtenues étaient liées à son mode respiratoire. Des branchies provenant de spécimens d’une masse corporelle comprise entre 2 g et 5 000 g ont été collectées, fixées et traitées pour des analyses morphométriques, histochimiques, immunohistochimiques, par microscopie électronique à transmission et à balayage (surface fractionnaire des cellules de chlorure - AFCC et densité). Dans les premiers stades de développement de l’espèce, la structure des branchies est similaire à celle des espèces aquatiques qui respirent obligatoirement, mais de profonds changements se produisent à mesure que l’animal grandit, influençant la respiration et les échanges ioniques. Les lamelles conservent leur structure organisationnelle, y compris la circulation des érythrocytes, mais elles deviennent vestigiales chez les animaux à partir de 1000 g, restant partiellement immergées dans l’épithélium filamentaire. Les principaux types de cellules qui composent l’épithélium branchial sont les cellules chlorées (CC), les cellules muqueuses (MC) et les cellules squameuses (PC). Les CP ont une forme irrégulière et des microplis disposés de manière aléatoire à la surface des cellules.
