Este trabalho compara os campos magnéticos de cargas em movimento linear com os de cargas em movimento orbital. Através de experiências qualitativas simples é mostrada a estrutura dos campos magnéticos criados por estes movimentos. É introduzido o conceito de campo magnético sem pólo (não-pólo), que é criado por cargas positivas e negativas em movimento linear e inercial, bem como por correntes em fios. É feita uma distinção entre um campo magnético dipolar e um campo magnético sem pólos. Prova-se que o campo magnético dipolar não é homogéneo, mas é uma soma de dois campos magnéticos que são mutuamente opostos em termos de propriedades eléctricas e de força. O campo magnético sem pólos é apenas uma parte do campo magnético dipolar. É o principal campo magnético e a razão da existência do campo magnético dipolar. É feita uma breve revisão dos diferentes tipos de magnetismo na matéria e do magnetismo criado por correntes diretas e alternadas nos fios. São descritos os principais fenómenos que ocorrem quando o campo magnético é aplicado num determinado meio ou substância.
