Questo lavoro confronta i campi magnetici di cariche in movimento lineare con quelli di cariche in movimento orbitale. Con semplici esperimenti qualitativi viene mostrata la struttura dei campi magnetici creati da questi movimenti. Viene introdotto il concetto di campo magnetico senza poli (non polare), creato da cariche positive e negative in movimento lineare e inerziale e da correnti nei fili. Si distingue tra un campo magnetico dipolo e un campo magnetico senza polo. Si dimostra che il campo magnetico a dipolo non è omogeneo, ma è una somma di due campi magnetici che sono reciprocamente opposti nelle proprietà elettriche e di forza. Il campo magnetico senza polo è solo una parte del campo magnetico di dipolo. È il campo magnetico principale e la ragione dell’esistenza del campo magnetico di dipolo. Viene fornita una breve rassegna dei diversi tipi di magnetismo nella materia e del magnetismo creato dalle correnti dirette e alternate nei fili. Vengono descritti i principali fenomeni che si verificano quando il campo magnetico viene applicato in un determinato mezzo o sostanza.
