Este libro analiza algunas obras de Gordon Henry, Leslie Marmon Silko, Linda Hogan, Louise Erdrich, Carter Revard, Leonard Peltier y Greg Sarris, autores pertenecientes a distintos pueblos amerindios de los Estados Unidos. Como en las literaturas de otros grupos minoritarios y porque viven en dos mundos, el propio y el de la cultura blanca, estos escritores producen obras mestizas desde el punto de vista cultural, aunque en ellas destaca la visión del mundo del grupo tribal del autor, que adquiere un papel preponderante tanto a nivel estructural como temático y lingüístico. En estas obras se quiebran constantemente los pares binarios típicos del pensamiento occidental (vida/muerte; humanidad/naturaleza; escritura/oralidad), y esa es la base de un arte rebelde en el que el lenguaje y lo no lingüístico están profundamente unidos y, por lo tanto, comprometidos con el mundo.
