格律詩是具有一千多年歷史的中國詩詞的一種形式。格律對一首詩的句數，每句的字數，何處應用押韻都有規定。格律詩還對句中每個字是平音或仄音也有要求。平仄的要求，是寫格律詩的最大挑戰。格律詩提倡包括 擬人，誇張，比喻，譏諷，詼諧，設問，無理，引典，雙關，言此及彼，宜曲不宜直等特點。西方的拼字遊戲（word puzzle）是將字母填進一矩陣中成字，喜者眾多。從某種角度說，寫唐詩填宋詞就是按嚴格的規則將漢字填入矩陣或多邊形中，沒有固定的答案，但可能會出現許多有深意的結果，是更有意義的文學遊戲，作者和讀者均可從中得到不可言喻的快感。寫格律詩一般認為要用文言文，要寫的古色古香，才有韻味。但這樣的要求，可能會使格律詩的時代性受到局限，如果適當地將現代的語言以格律的形式及特點寫入詩中，應該會使格律詩更有生命力，進而引起更多人的喜愛。如書名所述，本書的內容就是筆者用古格律寫現代詩的嘗試。本書彙編了約三百首作者寫作的詩詞及一百餘張配詩攝影，詩詞是筆者對所接觸的人，物，事，景，的描述，評論，與感懷。書的內容還包括了，詩詞背景，文字注釋，相關古詩，及成詩過程的討論。出版此書的目的之一是希望有更多的人在寫作或閱讀格律詩的過程中有所收益。蕭瑞琪 （Richard Hsiao）, 一九五五出生於美國賓州匹茲堡市。一九五七年隨父母回北京。 一九七七年考入北京科技大學，八二年獲學士學位。 一九八六年獲美國賓州大學材料科學博士學位。畢業後先後在AT&T貝爾實驗室，IBM研究中心，Hitachi研發部門就職，在許多不同的高科技領域中從事了科研與管理工作，是八十餘項美國專利的發明人。2009年以來，同在北京的原大學同學成立了詩友會，一起開始學習並創作格律詩詞。
