Broken is a psychological crime thriller that will get under your skin and stay on you mind. During the first three chapters you become invested in the protagonist’s story, and her dynamic relationship with Sam. Together they are thrown into the thick of a bad situation and face the corruptions of London’s Metropolitan police. Meeting Ashbeck in the fourth chapter, you are taken back in time to his childhood in order to understand him as an adult who is a dark soul who is set on an early path to become a sexual predator. You are under no illusion as to the dramatic scenes that unfold but the graphic details are spared. Throughout the novel twists are plentiful and each time you believe you’ve caught up with the story and believe you are abreast with what’s happening you will be in for another surprise. Some of the ordeals Ashbeck’s victims face will leave you considering the nature of human behaviour and how evil some individuals can be. Kate, our protagonist, narrates with empathy as she and Sam fight against the challenges stemming from every angle. Each are placed in situations that cause setbacks, including morality as they judge who they can trust, no not. Sam’s past catches up with them, but will Kate be able to forgive him and will it implement their investigaton? 3
