Britannicus is a tragedy written by Jean Racine in 1669. The play is set in ancient Rome and revolves around the power struggle between Emperor Nero and his stepbrother, Britannicus. The play begins with Britannicus being denied his rightful place as emperor by his mother, Agrippina, who has manipulated Nero into taking the throne. As the play progresses, tensions rise and secrets are revealed, leading to a tragic conclusion. Racine’s play is known for its exploration of themes such as power, betrayal, and the corrupting influence of absolute power. This 1903 edition of the play includes the original French text as well as an English translation by Robert Bruce Boswell. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
