What was it really like to grow up on a Nebraska Sandhills cattle ranch in the 1940s and 1950s?In Blizzards to Branding: Growing Up on a Nebraska Sandhills Ranch, Zane K. Quible preserves a remarkable chapter of rural American history through firsthand memories of childhood on a cattle ranch near Merriman, Nebraska. His family’s ranch, purchased by his grandparents in 1905, has remained under continuous family ownership for more than a century. Life in the Sandhills demanded resilience from an early age. Quible recalls the legendary Blizzard of 1949, when snowdrifts reached extraordinary heights, US Highway 20 was closed for nearly a month, and his parents battled bitter cold, deep snow, equipment failures, and exhaustion to save their cattle and protect their family. But ranch life was about far more than surviving severe weather. Quible takes readers into the everyday rhythms of calving and branding, haying, fighting prairie fires, raising cattle, and learning the importance of caring for the fragile Sandhills landscape. He remembers childhood chores, community gatherings, rodeos and dances, changing technology, and the small town of Merriman as it once was. Education was equally different from life today. Quible attended a one-room country school with only a handful of students and no electricity, running water, or indoor bathrooms. At times, when the schoolroom became too dark, lessons moved to his family’s living room. At just thirteen, he left home to attend an agriculture-based boarding high school 232 miles away. Filled with history, humor, family memories, and vivid accounts of a disappearing way of life, Blizzards to Branding is both a personal memoir and a tribute to the ranching families who helped shape the Nebraska Sandhills. It will appeal to readers interested in Nebraska history, cattle ranching, rural America, agricultural history, family ranches, the 1949 Blizzard, and life in the American West. 6
