I bivalvi limnetici, o naiadi dell’ordine Unionoida, rappresentano la più grande radiazione di bivalvi d’acqua dolce, con sei famiglie, 181 generi e 800 specie, sono presenti in tutti i continenti e attualmente rappresentano il gruppo di animali d’acqua dolce più a rischio di estinzione. La causa più drammatica del declino e dell’estinzione dei bivalvi d’acqua dolce è la modifica e la distruzione del loro habitat, il cambiamento climatico globale e l’introduzione di animali acquatici esotici (non autoctoni). Questo taxon è l’unico membro della classe Bivalvia riconosciuto per avere uno stadio larvale parassitario nel suo ciclo vitale, che comporta una relazione obbligatoria con un ospite vertebrato, di solito un pesce, e una larva altamente modificata, il gloquide o laside. Questa caratteristica del ciclo vitale è una componente fondamentale di qualsiasi piano di conservazione dei bivalvi limnetici. Al fine di propagare specie a rischio di estinzione, l’obiettivo è stato quello di sviluppare tecniche praticabili per ottenere forme giovanili in laboratorio attraverso la coltivazione artificiale (in vitro) di gloquidi.
