Contrairement aux polluants organiques, les métaux lourds ne peuvent pas être dégradés chimiquement. C’est pourquoi des procédés d’assainissement chimiques et physiques sont utilisés pour les éliminer avant qu’ils ne soient rejetés dans les masses d’eau. La plupart de ces procédés sont efficaces, mais ils peuvent être économiquement non viables ou aggraver le problème, car de grandes quantités de réactifs chimiques peuvent être nécessaires. L’ajout de réactifs chimiques permet d’éliminer le métal, mais crée un nouveau problème lié à l’élimination des produits chimiques. La bioremédiation, qui utilise des micro-organismes comme matériau biosorbant, a été appliquée avec succès dans plusieurs cas. Les cellules de levure peuvent accumuler des ions métalliques à la surface de la cellule par le processus d’adsorption, qui est un processus passif, ou absorber activement le métal, qui est accumulé à l’intérieur de la cellule. Dans ce travail, divers paramètres biologiques, physiologiques et chimiques ont été étudiés, qui sont importants pour sélectionner les levures qui peuvent être utilisées pour capturer le cadmium dans les milieux aqueux.
