Os biomateriais cardiovasculares (CB) dominam a categoria de biomateriais com base na procura e nos investimentos neste campo. Este livro classifica os CB em três classes principais, nomeadamente metais, polímeros e materiais biológicos, e compila as informações sobre os CB. A compatibilidade com o sangue é um dos principais critérios que limitam a utilização de biomateriais para aplicações cardiovasculares. Vários intervenientes importantes associados à compatibilidade com o sangue são brevemente discutidos. Para melhorar a compatibilidade dos CB, várias estratégias de modificação da superfície estão atualmente em uso. Algumas aplicações recentes da tecnologia de modificação da superfície em materiais para dispositivos cardiovasculares também foram discutidas para uma melhor compreensão. Por fim, é apresentada a tendência atual do CB, a endotelização de implantes cardíacos e a utilização de células estaminais pluripotentes induzidas humanas (ihPSCs). O campo do CB está em constante crescimento e muitos novos investigadores e pesquisadores estão a desenvolver interesse nesta área. Este livro servirá como um recurso completo para compreender rapidamente a investigação básica no campo do CB.
