Le foreste sacre, radicate nelle tradizioni locali, svolgono un ruolo cruciale nella conservazione della biodiversità. Lo studio condotto nella foresta sacra di Ene, situata nella provincia di Tshuapa nella RDC, ha valutato la diversità dei grandi mammiferi utilizzando trappole fotografiche e una passeggiata di ricognizione. Sono state identificate otto specie, tra cui il bufalo nano (Syncerus caffer nanus), il leopardo (Panthera pardus) e diversi duiker. I primati sono stati i più rappresentati, con il 78,84% degli avvistamenti. Il bonobo (Pan paniscus) è stata la specie più abbondante (FRI = 71,15%, IKA = 2,46 individui/km), seguita dal bufalo nano. Tre specie - il bonobo, il leopardo e il colobo rosso di Thollon - sono sulla lista rossa dell’IUCN. Lo studio sottolinea che le regole tradizionali di gestione delle foreste sacre contribuiscono efficacemente alla protezione della fauna selvatica, così come le leggi che regolano le aree protette.
