Los artefactos arqueológicos -las huellas del pasado humano- son considerados a menudo como bienes y testimonios que hacen parte del acervo, la herencia o el patrimonio cultural de países, naciones o grupos culturales particulares e, incluso, como parte de la memoria de la humanidad. Sin embargo, no se trata de categorías intercambiables o de una condición inmanente, sino del producto de una economía política del pasado que se desenvuelve de manera particular, aun cuando no aislada, en procesos geohistóricos específicos y prácticas políticas, económicas y culturales. Así, Bienes arqueológicos: una lectura transversal sobre legislación y políticas culturales permite una aproximación a algunos de esos procesos a escala internacional, a la vez que propone un análisis comparado, en perspectiva diacrónica y geográficamente transversal, de las discontinuidades que caracterizan la “biografía” de estas huellas y artefactos, que genéricamente son denominados como bienes del patrimonio arqueológico. 10
