Pleurotus ostreatus lässt sich leicht künstlich züchten und ist ein effizienter Lignin abbauender Pilz, der weltweit in den Tropen, Subtropen und gemäßigten Zonen auf verschiedenen Arten von Lignocellulose-Materialien gut wachsen kann. Pleurotus ostreatus ist fett- und kalorienarm und daher gut für Diabetiker geeignet. Er ist außerdem reich an den Vitaminen B, D, K und manchmal auch an den Vitaminen A und C. Er enthält mehr Eiweiß als jedes andere pflanzliche Lebensmittel und ist auch eine gute Quelle für Mineralstoffe. Unterernährung ist ein Problem in den Entwicklungsländern der Dritten Welt, und daher ist sie aufgrund ihres Geschmacks, ihrer Beschaffenheit, ihres Nährwerts und ihrer medizinischen Wirkung sowie ihrer hohen Flächenproduktivität eine hervorragende Nahrungsquelle zur Linderung der Unterernährung in Entwicklungsländern. Pleurotus ostreatus ist auch wirksam gegen Bluthochdruck, da der K-Gehalt gegenüber dem Ca-Gehalt überwiegt und ein Gleichgewicht zwischen K und Ca besteht.
