Neben grundlegenden Untersuchungen, welche die Zusammenhänge zwischen Bevölkerungsentwicklung und Umweltbedingungen beschreiben und erklären, stehen vor allem anwendungsbezogene Themen aus Epidemiologie und Entwicklungspolitik im Vordergrund. Die Inadäquanz von Problemstruktur und Handlungsstruktur ist dabei das gemeinsame Thema der Humanökologie.
