Il existe plusieurs raisons pour lesquelles il est nécessaire de protéger les installations nucléaires en service. La principale et la plus importante raison est de protéger les personnes, les équipements et les structures contre les effets nocifs des rayonnements. Une exposition à des niveaux modérés ou élevés de rayonnements peut entraîner l’absorption d’une quantité suffisante de rayonnements pour altérer et détruire des cellules vivantes, ce qui peut ensuite entraîner le développement d’un cancer et, dans certains cas, causer des dommages génétiques ou des malformations congénitales. L’utilisation du HDSC comme matériau de blindage permet d’installer des parois d’épaisseur raisonnable, capables d’atténuer les neutrons et les photons. C’est un avantage, car le processus d’absorption des rayonnements nécessite normalement des blindages très épais pour garantir que les niveaux de dosage requis soient atteints après le passage des rayonnements à travers le blindage. L’utilisation du béton comme matériau de blindage présente de nombreux avantages, notamment celui de pouvoir être coulé dans presque toutes les formes complexes (Callan, 1962) et celui de pouvoir adapter ses caractéristiques de blindage à un large éventail d’utilisations en variant sa composition et sa densité (Kaplan, 1989).
