Istnieje kilka powodów, dla których w instalacjach jądrowych wymagane jest ekranowanie obiektów operacyjnych. Głównym i najważniejszym powodem ekranowania przed promieniowaniem jest ochrona ludzi, sprzętu i konstrukcji przed szkodliwym działaniem promieniowania. Narażenie na umiarkowane i wysokie poziomy promieniowania może spowodować absorpcję wystarczającej ilości promieniowania, która może zmienić i zniszczyć żywe komórki, co może później przekształcić się w nowotwór, a w niektórych przypadkach nawet spowodować uszkodzenia genetyczne lub wady wrodzone. Zastosowanie HDSC jako materiału osłonowego pozwala na instalację ścian o rozsądnej grubości, które są w stanie osłabić neutrony i fotony. Jest to zaleta, ponieważ proces absorpcji promieniowania wymaga zazwyczaj bardzo grubych osłon, aby zapewnić osiągnięcie wymaganych poziomów dawki po przejściu promieniowania przez osłonę. Jedną z wielu zalet stosowania betonu jako materiału osłonowego jest to, że można go formować w niemal dowolny złożony kształt (Callan, 1962), a poprzez zmianę jego składu i gęstości właściwości osłonowe betonu można dostosować do szerokiego zakresu zastosowań (Kaplan, 1989).
