Le profil de Vasco de Gama n’a pas été tracé uniquement par la splendeur et l’héroïsme. Le roman Peregrinação de Barnabé das Índias (1998), de Mário Cláudio, est un exemple qui montre que Vasco de Gama, loin d’être une figure historiquement définie, est une source plurielle d’interprétations et d’inférences. Afin de montrer que cette œuvre de Mário Cláudio n’est pas une simple reproduction chronologique de cette entreprise, nous avons jugé opportun de situer l’auteur et son œuvre par rapport à la tradition critique dans laquelle il s’inscrit, en cherchant à synthétiser un parcours ponctué par des manifestations tant historiques que littéraires qui couvrent également la représentation des voyages de Vasco da Gama. En outre, nous verrons que dans cette œuvre, l’auteur explore les croyances disponibles à l’époque primitive des navigations outre-mer, constituées des royaumes légendaires et des bestiaires de notre tradition occidentale. Ces éléments imaginaires, encore latents au cours des XVe et XVIe siècles, joueront un rôle important dans le plan historique de ce roman, fondant la représentation d’un imaginaire ambitieux et incontrôlé qui reflète la complexité de la mentalité de la Renaissance, ainsi que le besoin humain de nouvelles expériences.
