En 1775 Bernardin de Saint-Pierre quitte Paris pour se rendre en Normandie, pour revoir sa sœur et les gens qu’il avait depuis longtemps perdus de vue. Il fait ce voyage surtout à pied et en route il rédige un texte au jour le jour, décrivant ce qu’il voit autour de lui, les paysages, les gens, les incidents. Ces descriptions sont ponctuées de réflexions et commentaires, et nous pouvons voir une pensée philosophique qui se prépare, des idées qui, plus tard, vont se trouver dans ses textes publiés, surtout Les Études de la nature qui seront publiées en 1784 et qui, dans la troisième édition de 1788, contiendront la première édition du roman, Paul et Virginie. Ce voyage en Normandie se trouve en forme manuscrite à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Ce n’est pas l’ouvrage d’un jeune homme car Bernardin a près de 40 ans lorsqu’il rédige ce texte. Il a voyagé partout dans le monde, en Europe de l’est, en Russie, et même dans l’océan indien. Mais ce texte normand le ramène chez lui, dans son pays natal, et il nous présente une région en pleine transition, une image frappante d’une province dans les dernières années de l’ancien régime.Malcolm Cook est professeur émérite à l’université d’Exeter en Grande-Bretagne. Spécialiste de la fiction en prose du dix-huitième siècle français, auteur de nombreux articles sur Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, et directeur du projet La Correspondance de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, publiée par la Fondation Voltaire.
