Die Tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) ist eine wichtige Gemüsekultur, die weltweit sowohl im Freiland als auch unter Schutz angebaut wird. Die Pflanze ist dem Befall durch verschiedene Krankheiten ausgesetzt, wobei die von Alternaria solani (Ellis und Martin) Sorauer verursachte Frühfäule die verheerendste ist. Ein Feldscreening von 81 Tomatengenotypen auf Frühfäule ergab, dass 11 Genotypen hochresistent, 23 resistent, 22 mäßig resistent, 15 anfällig und 10 hochanfällig waren. Gegen Frühfäule resistente Genotypen lieferten im Vergleich zu anfälligen Genotypen einen deutlich höheren Ertrag. Alle getesteten Fungizide (Dithene M-45, Blitox-50 und Kavach) und Neem-Pestizide (Bioneem, Fortune und Nimbicidine) wirkten sich positiv auf die Krankheitsbekämpfung und die Ertragssteigerung der getesteten Wirtspflanzen aus. Die hochresistenten Wildarten L. pimpinellifolium und L. peruvianum wiesen im Vorinfektionsstadium im Vergleich zu anfälligen Genotypen einen höheren Gehalt an Zuckern, Phenolen, Vitamin C, freien Aminosäuren insgesamt, Rohprotein insgesamt, Chlorophyll und NPK auf, während nach der Infektion bei den anfälligen Genotypen eine deutliche Verringerung des Gehalts dieser Bestandteile im Vergleich zu den resistenten Genotypen beobachtet wurde.
