Uma função crítica do controlo executivo é a capacidade de inibir ou alterar de forma flexível um plano de ação quando este é contextualmente inadequado. Utilizando a fMRI humana e uma tarefa de sinal de paragem dependente do contexto (SST), encontrámos uma dupla dissociação funcional entre o córtex pré-frontal ventrolateral direito (rVLPFC) e o campo ocular frontal bi-lateral (FEF). A ativação do rVLPFC estava associada à deteção e codificação do significado dos sinais de paragem e à inibição da resposta, enquanto a atividade do FEF reflectia a produção motora, independentemente do mapeamento da resposta ao estímulo ou do contexto. Além disso, a representação do significado do sinal de paragem e a inibição da resposta foram representadas em regiões separadas do rVLPFC. Estes resultados foram ainda validados por registos electrofisiológicos no rVLPFC e no FEF de um macaco. Os resultados sugerem que a inibição de um comportamento planeado não é governada por um único sistema cerebral, como tinha sido proposto anteriormente, mas depende de dois processos neuralmente distintos.
