O objetivo do estudo era investigar os obstáculos a uma comunicação eficaz no ensino à distância na Universidade Aberta da Tanzânia (OUT) - Centro Regional de Tanga. Sessenta e nove inquiridos participaram no estudo através de questionários, discussões em grupo e entrevistas semi-estruturadas. Os dados para o estudo foram recolhidos em torno dos seguintes temas específicos: Barreiras de comunicação causadas pelos estudantes da OUT, barreiras causadas pela OUT como instituição operacional e barreiras causadas pela língua inglesa como meio de instrução. O Centro Regional de Tanga e o Korogwe Teachers’ College (KTC), que são centros de exame da OUT, foram as áreas de estudo. Foi utilizada a técnica de condensação de significados para analisar os dados qualitativos obtidos. A incompetência nas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) e na Língua Inglesa foram algumas das principais barreiras à comunicação efectiva na provisão e prestação de ensino à distância no Centro Regional OUT-Tanga. Além disso, a administração da OUT não instalou serviços de Internet fiáveis no Centro Regional de Tanga e não digitalizou todos os seus materiais de estudo.
