Allerdings kann ein Großteil der Entwicklungsländer keinen Stahl für den Bau vor Ort produzieren. Bambus wächst schnell, ist stabil und nachhaltig. Diese Studie untersucht die Machbarkeit der Verwendung von Bambus als Verstärkung in Betonkonstruktionen. Der Artikel gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die bestehende Forschung zu bambusverstärktem Beton, vergleicht die Eigenschaften von Bambus und Stahl und identifiziert praktische Überlegungen hinsichtlich ihrer Verwendung im Bauwesen. Außerdem wird eine experimentelle Untersuchung beschrieben, bei der eine Reihe von bambusverstärkten Betonplatten auf ihre Biegefestigkeit getestet wurden. Die Arbeit liefert Belege für die Leistungsfähigkeit von bambusverstärkten Betonelementen, vergleicht sie mit herkömmlichen stahlverstärkten Platten und untersucht die Vorteile einer Behandlung der Bambusbewehrung zur Abdichtung und Verbesserung der Haftung mit Beton. Abschließend wird die Machbarkeit des Ersatzes von Stahlbewehrung durch Bambus kommentiert.
