Toxoplasma gondii jest jednym z najbardziej rozpowszechnionych pasożytów w przyrodzie, a znaczenie tego pasożyta dla położników polega na tym, że chociaż zdecydowana większość niemowląt urodzonych przez matki zarażone toksoplazmozą w czasie ciąży przebiega bezobjawowo, znane są skutki, takie jak poronienia, wczesna śmiertelność niemowląt i ślepota, które są związane z tą chorobą odzwierzęcą, gdy matki są zarażone w pierwszym i drugim trymestrze ciąży.Duża liczba wrodzonych wad rozwojowych występuje bez znajomości konkretnej przyczyny, a toksoplazmoza jest jedną z chorób powodujących wrodzone wady rozwojowe. Ludzie zarażają się T. gondii poprzez przypadkowe spożycie surowego lub niedogotowanego mięsa, spożycie żywności lub wody zanieczyszczonej oocystami kota lub wrodzoną transmisję tachyzoitów. Infekcja u kobiet w ciąży przebiega głównie bezobjawowo i nie jest diagnozowana, ale może być przenoszona na płód i powodować infekcje wrodzone, a podczas ciąży może prowadzić do śmierci płodu, śmierci noworodka lub różnych wad wrodzonych, takich jak wodogłowie, nieprawidłowości ośrodkowego układu nerwowego i zapalenie naczyniówki i siatkówki.
