Stawonogi stanowią najbardziej zróżnicowany typ w królestwie zwierząt, obejmujący ponad milion opisanych gatunków, które pełnią kluczowe role ekologiczne, takie jak zapylanie, rozkład materii organicznej, drapieżnictwo i obieg składników odżywczych. W środowiskach podmiejskich, takich jak kampusy uniwersyteckie, bezkręgowce te zamieszkują mikrośrodowiska, w tym ogrody, trawniki i budynki, pełniąc rolę wskaźników stanu środowiska.
