Wzrost kryształów nie pozostaje zjawiskiem występującym wyłącznie w naturze, ale stał się zaawansowaną i szeroko stosowaną techniką laboratoryjną. Zawsze istniało zapotrzebowanie na dobrej jakości kryształy do różnych zastosowań w nauce i technologii; stąd różne techniki wzrostu opracowane w celu wyhodowania odpowiednich kryształów. Stwierdzono, że właściwości krystaliczne mają zastosowanie w urządzeniach takich jak: rezonatory laserowe, modulatory akustyczno-optyczne, płytki zaniku fazy, polaryzatory, detektory piroelektryczne, urządzenia piezoelektryczne, krystaliczne monochromatory rentgenowskie, detektory scyntylacyjne, urządzenia holograficzne, membrany elektrod selektywnych żelaza i podłoża do cienkich warstw. Niniejsza książka dotyczy wzrostu kryształów winianu techniką żelową; stąd szczegóły techniki żelowej są omówione w niniejszym dokumencie.
