Os argumentos sobre a simulação, segundo os quais o universo e a nossa experiência do mesmo podem ser simulações computorizadas construídas por civilizações avançadas (extraterrestres ou nossos descendentes humanos/pós-humanos), têm sido objeto de um debate generalizado desde a formulação filosófica original da posição principal de Bostrom em 2003. Desde então, os elementos-chave do argumento - impulsionados pelo filme 'Matrix' e pelas suas sequelas e spin-offs que cobrem cenários semelhantes - têm sido discutidos criticamente por filósofos, psicólogos, críticos literários e cientistas, existindo atualmente uma vasta literatura sobre o tema.
