A popularidade atual do mindfulness levou a aplicações numa vasta gama de disciplinas académicas - incluindo a educação, a psicologia, a psicoterapia e o campo da saúde mente-corpo em geral (Purser, Forbes & Burke, 2016) - para além da sua utilização generalizada na cultura popular para publicitar tudo, desde livros para colorir a regimes de dieta e manuais de jardinagem. Os críticos desta mercantilização das aplicações da atenção plena apontaram o divórcio de tais práticas das suas raízes na ética e nos preceitos budistas, o que - nos piores casos de 'McMindfulness' - resultou numa utilização incorrecta e grosseira, se não mesmo num abuso total, dos princípios da atenção plena (Purser, 2013; Hyland, 2018). Embora aceitando a força de tais críticas (que discuti extensivamente noutro lugar; Hyland, 2016, 2017), este artigo adopta uma perspetiva mais ampla e apresenta argumentos sobre as formas como o fenómeno da atenção plena abriu caminhos frutíferos de conetividade entre as formas de pensamento orientais (principalmente budistas) e as concepções ocidentais de filosofia e ciência.
