A dor não controlada desencadeia respostas físicas e emocionais ao stress, inibe a cicatrização, aumenta o risco de outras complicações e aumenta o tempo de permanência na unidade de cuidados intensivos. O enfermeiro de cuidados intensivos tem um papel único e importante na gestão da dor, que inclui: realizar avaliações da dor, ensinar o paciente, prestar cuidados físicos, ajudar a aliviar a dor através da administração de intervenções analgésicas, incluindo abordagens farmacológicas e não farmacológicas.
