A incapacidade relacionada com a osteoartrite do joelho é elevada na população idosa. Os doentes sentem dificuldade em caminhar/correr, uma opção importante e fácil para reduzir o risco de doenças cardiovasculares. A rigidez, a dor e outros sintomas relacionados com o joelho podem limitar o estado funcional e as actividades recreativas dos doentes. Assim, estes indivíduos sofrem de um impacto progressivo nas suas actividades da vida diária, o que leva à perda de lazer, vida social, qualidade do sono e, consequentemente, à diminuição da sua qualidade de vida. A deterioração da QdV em doentes com OA do joelho está também associada à gravidade das manifestações clínicas e às caraterísticas radiográficas. Verificou-se que a QdV dos doentes com OA do joelho é significativamente pior do que a QdV comparada com a dos doentes saudáveis (doentes sem OA).
