É habitualmente utilizado no fabrico de componentes de engenharia para os proteger da corrosão e aumentar a sua vida útil.A presente investigação centra-se no estudo do efeito dos modos de transferência de metal, utilizando variantes GMAW, nas caraterísticas da superfície do revestimento de soldadura por arco de metal gasoso do aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L sobre aço macio. As caraterísticas macroestruturais e microestruturais da região revestida foram analisadas utilizando microscopia ótica (MO) e microscopia eletrónica de varrimento (MEV).
