Studien zur Partikelablagerung in den menschlichen Atemwegen sind äußerst wichtig, um die Gefahren der Exposition gegenüber luftgetragenen Partikeln zu charakterisieren, wirksame medikamentöse Behandlungsmethoden für chronische Atemwegserkrankungen zu entwickeln und die Dosimetrie für die Arbeitshygiene und medizinische Behandlungen zu bewerten. In diesem Buch wurden CFD-Analysen (Computational Fluid Dynamics) an einem Modell der oberen Atemwege mit verschiedenen laminaren und turbulenten Inspirationsströmen durchgeführt. Die Luftstromeigenschaften und die Druckverteilung wurden entsprechend analysiert. Außerdem wurde ein Lagrangescher Ansatz verwendet, um den Transport und die Ablagerung der injizierten Mikropartikel durch die nasalen Atemwege zu untersuchen. Es zeigte sich, dass die Morphologie der oberen Atemwege einen erheblichen Einfluss auf das Strömungsmuster und die Ablagerungsanteile der Mikropartikel hat. Die Analyse der lokalen Depositionsfraktionen bewies, dass die oberen Atemwege eine wichtige Rolle bei der Filterung von Mikropartikeln spielen.
