In Indien fand die Demonetarisierung dreimal statt. Die erste fand am 12. Januar 1946 statt, die zweite am 16. Januar 1978 (Montag) und die dritte am 8. November 2016 (Dienstag). Es gibt verschiedene andere Länder, die die Demonetarisierung ebenfalls ausprobiert haben, darunter Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, Simbabwe, Nordkorea, die Sowjetunion, Myanmar, Australien usw. Indien wollte mit der Demonetarisierungsstrategie ein signifikantes Wachstum erreichen und langfristig einen großen positiven Einfluss auf die gesamte Wirtschaft ausüben. Unter den Engländern führte die Regierung im Januar 1946 die Demonetarisierung der Banknoten im Wert von Rs. 1.000 und Rs. 10.000 ein. Im Jahr 1954 führte die indische Regierung unter Nehru neue Banknoten im Wert von 1.000, 5.000 und 10.000 Rs. ein. Am 16. Januar 1978 hat die indische Koalitionsregierung unter Morarji Desai die Geldscheine im Wert von 1.000, 5.000 und 10.000 Rs. demonetisiert, um Falschgeld und Schwarzgeld zu bekämpfen. Schätzungen zufolge hat Indien mit über 12 % des Bruttoinlandsprodukts einen der höchsten Bargeldbestände im Umlauf, und 87 % davon sind Rs500- und Rs1000-Scheine. Dies ist eine weltweite Praxis.
