Dans l’industrie minière, des équipements (excavateurs) sont chargés d’extraire des matériaux du sol à l’aide de godets personnalisés munis de SPF (outils de pénétration dans le sol) à leur extrémité, qui constitue le premier contact avec le sol. Ceux-ci s’usent fortement en raison de l’abrasivité du sol, qui est tantôt très friable, tantôt très compact. Un autre facteur prépondérant est l’impact auquel ces SPF sont soumis en raison de la nécessité d’enlever de gros rochers des pentes. En d’autres termes, les SPF sont soumis à deux des principaux facteurs qui réduisent leur durée de vie : l’IMPACT et l’ABRASION. Plusieurs études ont été menées pour augmenter la durée de vie utile de ces composants, réduire les coûts de production et augmenter la productivité des machines, car plus la durée de vie utile de la pointe est longue, plus la disponibilité physique de l’équipement est grande.
