Auferstehung ist nach Krieg und Frieden und Anna Karenina der dritte und letzte Roman von Leo Tolstoi. Er wurde im Jahr 1899 veröffentlicht, zwanzig Jahre nach Anna Karenina. Tolstoi schrieb mehr als zehn Jahre an dem Roman. Die Geschichte baut auf einem Gerichtsfall auf, von dem ihm ein Freund 1887 erzählt hatte. Die Handlung thematisiert die Läuterung der Protagonisten durch moralisches Handeln. Ein adliger Gutsherr, als Geschworener bei Gericht, erkennt in einer angeklagten Prostituierten ein von ihm verführtes Mädchen wieder, verführt in einer Osternacht, dem Fest der Auferstehung Christi. Er fühlt sich mitschuldig an ihrem Schicksal und bemüht sich um eine Urteilsrevision. Er erfährt die ganze Unvollkommenheit des damaligen Rechtssystems und folgt ihr schließlich in Zwangsarbeit und Verbannung. Lew Nikolajewitsch Graf Tolstoi (1828-1910), war ein russischer Schriftsteller. Seine Hauptwerke Krieg und Frieden und Anna Karenina sind Klassiker des realistischen Romans.
