Inhaltsangabe:Bei der Studie handelt es sich um eine Abschlussarbeit im Rahmen eines Weiterbildungsstudiums eines privaten Anbieters. Literaturangaben sind außer dem vom Weiterbildungsträger angebotenen Lehrmitteln (vier Quellenangaben) nicht für die Erstellung der Arbeit verwendet worden, da es sich um eine vorwiegend empirische Arbeit handelt. Einleitung: Obwohl der Online-Markt durch das Platzen der Spekulationsblase ab dem Jahr 2000 herbe Rückschläge hinnehmen musste, boomt das Geschäft im Internet nach wie vor. Nach einer Studie des Branchenverbandes BITKOM, überschritten die bundesweiten Umsätze im Jahr 2004 erstmals die Marke von 200 Milliarden Euro. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr wurde ein Umsatzplus von 76 Prozent erreicht. Der größte Teil entfiel auf Geschäfte zwischen Unternehmen, doch der Online-Handel mit Privatkunden legte ebenfalls stark zu. Das Handelsvolumen im Internet soll sich bis 2008 noch mehr als verdreifachen. Große Online-Händler wie z.B. Amazon, deren Hauptgeschäft aus dem Verkauf von Bücher, CDs und Elektroartikel besteht, oder die weltgrößte Plattform für Online-Auktionen Ebay, haben in wenigen Jahren eine dominierende Marktstellung eingenommen. Die vorherrschende Stellung dieser Unternehmen stellt für alle anderen, die in gleicher Weise und in gleicher Größe in den Markt eintreten wollen, eine gewaltige Eintrittsbarriere dar. Mitbewerber machen nur noch unbedeutende Umsätze, oder sind ganz vom Markt verschwunden. Während Ebay, auch aufgrund von immer wieder auftretenden Negativschlagzeilen, hauptsächlich durch seinen Bekanntheitsgrad beeindruckt, glänzt Amazon neben den über Jahre aufgebautem Image als größter Online-Buchhändler mit einem hohen Käufervertrauen. Während Ebay auf Masse setzt (mittlerweile werden ein Drittel aller Online-Handelsaktivitäten in Deutschland auf Ebay abgewickelt), setzt Amazon auf Klasse.
