Attila war von 434 bis zu seinem Tod 'König' (rex) des Kriegerverbandes der Hunnen. Attila unternahm wiederholt Kriegszüge, die oft mit großer Härte durchgeführt wurden und sich zunächst gegen Ostrom, 451/52 jedoch vor allem gegen Westrom richteten. Zentrum seines Machtbereichs war das Gebiet des heutigen Ungarns, wo die Hunnen im 5. Jahrhundert ein kurzlebiges Reich errichteten, das unter Attila die größte Machtentfaltung erlebte, aber bereits kurz nach seinem Tod wieder zusammenbrach. Felix Dahn (1834-1912) war ein deutscher Professor für Rechtswissenschaften, Schriftsteller und Historiker. Aus dem Buch: 'Als Attila durch das Südthor eingeritten war und das erste Haus des Lagers beinahe erreicht hatte, öffnete sich dessen Thüre und heraus schritt, in ein weißes Peplon mit breitem Goldrande gehüllt, eine junge Frau von edelster Gesichtsbildung, gefolgt von zahlreichen Mägden und Dienern: sie trug einen Säugling auf dem Arm. Die junge Mutter blieb stehen dicht vor des Herrschers Rappen, der, zurückgehalten, ungeduldig scharrte: sie kniete nieder und legte das Kind vor die Hufen des Hengstes: erst als Attila ihr schweigend Bejahung zugenickt hatte, hob sie es wieder auf, küßte es, stand auf, neigte tief das Haupt und schritt mit dem Säugling in das Haus zurück.'
