Este estudo começa com o padrão demográfico espácio-temporal da cidade de Barddhaman. A evolução histórica da cidade também foi discutida em grande pormenor para ajudar a compreender o uso do solo no passado e no presente, o padrão das ruas e as percepções dos residentes sobre o respetivo ambiente. No entanto, o foco principal deste estudo foi a morfologia da parte antiga da cidade. Mais especificamente, não toda a cidade, mas apenas o Rajbati e as áreas contíguas foram objeto de um estudo pormenorizado. Estas zonas são definidas como o 'núcleo urbano antigo' de Barddhaman.
