Aufgrund der Zunahme von Krankenhausinfektionen und der Resistenz der pathogenen Mikroorganismen sowie des Mangels an Medikamenten zur Bekämpfung und Hemmung ihres Wachstums wurde nach neuen Alternativen zu ihrer Bekämpfung gesucht. Dazu gehören Harnwegsinfektionen, die zu den vier häufigsten Arten von Krankenhausinfektionen gehören. Sie werden durch Candida albicans verursacht und stellen eine wachsende Bedrohung für die menschliche Gesundheit dar, da sie nosokomiale Infektionen und Candidämie verursachen, die zum Tod führen können. Die Fähigkeit von Candida albicans, Biofilme auf inerten Oberflächen, wie z. B. Harnkathetern, zu bilden, erhöht seine Pathogenität und führt zu Resistenzen gegen antimykotische Medikamente. In dieser Studie werden daher neue Alternativen zur Bekämpfung dieser resistenten Mikroorganismen aufgezeigt, wobei Palmarosa-Öl (Cymbopogon martini) verwendet wird, das signifikante Ergebnisse gezeigt hat, wie z. B. seine antibiofilmische und antimykotische Aktivität gegen Candida albicans in Harnkathetern.
