Les Etats Africains marquent depuis 1960 un intérêt pour le secteur des assurances, qui contribue à la sécurisation des personnes et des biens, mais également au financement des économies et donc de la croissance économique. Dès lors, sur quoi se base cette certitude ? Quels en sont les leviers et les déterminants ? Existe-t-il une causalité ou une corrélation entre l’assurance et la croissance économique ? Telles sont les questions que se pose le Dr. Andrew GWODOG, un haut cadre dirigeant de l’assurance Africaine qui s’est approprié l’abondante polémique sur cette question. Il a pu se rendre compte que le débat est souvent théorique et empirique et que les analyses se cristallisent sur deux axes : le premier qui a trait au rôle de catalyseur de l’assurance sur l’incertitude aux fins de dynamiser la croissance économique, le second sur les conditions nécessaires à la pertinence de ces liens. Aussi, s’appuyant sur le modèle de Ward et Zurnruegg, qui combine des variables endogènes et exogènes, il a appliqué ce test aux données des six (6) pays de la CIMA-CEMAC. Comme pour les pays de l’OCDE, les résultats démontrent dans tous les cas une corrélation et pas toujours une causalité.
