A violência sexual refere-se a qualquer toque sexual não desejado ou não consensual, vitimização conseguida através da força física, ameaça, dissuasão e compulsão. Muitos actos de hostilidade sexual ocorrem também em conjunto com a violência física. Esta forma de violência pode ocorrer em mais de cinquenta por cento das relações fisicamente violentas. Os actos de abuso sexual incluem: violação, incesto, sexo forçado com outros, sexo oral forçado, indecência, molestação na esfera pública e privada. Os actos de violência física incluem: esbofetear, afogar, agarrar, puxar os cabelos, esmurrar, torcer os braços, empurrar, pendurar pelo pescoço, braços ou pés, pontapear, algemar com as mãos, dar joelhadas, amarrar com cordas, asfixiar, arranhar, empurrar para o chão, ameaçar com uma arma ou faca, morder, ameaçar com objectos em chamas e partir ou atirar objectos. A violência física é geralmente acompanhada de maus tratos psicológicos e, em muitos casos, de agressões sexuais.
