A aventura de Mudimbe, como ele a descreve, é uma arqueologia da produção de conhecimento africanista e 'africanizado'. A questão que o preocupa é o que torna possíveis os comentários históricos, antropológicos e religiosos sobre África. Mais especificamente, as suas questões prendem-se com a sua constituição como sistema de conhecimento, o estilo, a forma e o conteúdo deste conhecimento e, finalmente, as grandes questões filosóficas que dele emanam. Mais concretamente, o autor investiga de perto a ordem epistemológica ocidental e os seus modos de análise, que, segundo ele, se encontram em abordagens que se pretendem afro-centradas e baseadas em tradições africanas autênticas. O objetivo deste livro é também mostrar que: o conceito de 'democracia' em África.
