O cultivo e o uso de plantas medicinais, in natura, nasceu em 2005 na Penitenciária Regional de Bom Jesus PI 'Dom Abel Alonso Núñez' copiando o modelo de cultivo das hortas e havendo a necessidade pelas condições financeiras e escassez de medicamentos para tratar dos detentos se buscou a alternativa da implementação do plantio de plantas medicinais pelos detentos nas áreas ociosas e internas da unidade prisional de Bom Jesus.O trabalho foi desenvolvido visando não só a melhoria da saúde física dos detentos, mas também da saúde mental, uma vez que o trabalho laboral voltado para o cultivo agrícola, notadamente tem contribuído para a ressocialização dos detentos da unidade prisional de Bom Jesus, Estado do Piauí. A Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Bom Jesus copiou a ideia do uso das plantas medicinais no modelo antigo da Penitenciária Regional de Bom Jesus, a produção das plantas pelos detentos é levada para a Farmácia Básica Municipal, favorecendo a população bonjesuense.
