As convicções sobre o eu são um fenómeno analisado e estudado na literatura científica, principalmente no que se refere à aplicação de técnicas psicoterapêuticas (por exemplo, terapia cognitivo-comportamental, análise transacional, técnicas de liberdade emocional) e em relação à programação neurolinguística. As convicções dizem respeito ao modo de pensar individual, são um tipo de cognição que representa ideias dominantes sobre o eu e a situação de vida do indivíduo, bem como os primeiros pensamentos por ocasião de um determinado evento (Benson, N., Colin, C. Ginsberg, D., Grand, V., Lazyan, M.e Weeks, M., 2014, p. 143-145). As pessoas têm um conjunto de convicções - pensamentos que assumem como verdadeiros e que definem a forma como percecionam e experienciam a realidade (Sargent, E e Fearon, T. 2012, página 20). As convicções são sugestões, presunções, que fazemos para nós próprios, para as outras pessoas e para o mundo como um todo e que percepcionamos como a verdade (Bavister, S. e Vickers, A., 2016, página 102). Todas as convicções influenciam as nossas vidas; definem as nossas reacções ao mundo exterior, como demonstrado pelo efeito placebo (Dawson, K. e Marillat, K.., 2016, página 18).
